The Giant Has a Name | Facing Your Struggles Honestly With God
How do you face the giants in your life when you would rather avoid them? In First Samuel 17, Scripture does not describe David’s enemy vaguely. The giant is identified by name: Goliath. Sometimes the first step toward facing what feels overwhelming is honestly naming what you are fighting.
We often soften the language around the hardest struggles of our lives.
Addiction becomes a “demon.” Depression or other mental health struggles are ignored in hopes they will eventually disappear. A broken marriage becomes “complicated.” Financial collapse becomes a “rough patch.” Deep grief becomes a “season.”
But avoiding the name does not make the giant smaller.
In this episode of Digging Another Well, we continue our David and Goliath Bible study through First Samuel 17 and explore why honesty matters when Christians face addiction, depression, grief, broken relationships, financial struggles, fear, illness, and other overwhelming circumstances.
“And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.” — First Samuel 17:4 KJV
The Bible is remarkably specific about Goliath. He has a name. His hometown is identified. His height is measured. His armor and weapons are described in detail.
Scripture brings the giant completely into the light.
There is an important spiritual lesson in that specificity. The struggles we refuse to name can become even larger in our imagination. When something remains hidden behind vague language, avoidance, or denial, it becomes difficult to confront honestly.
David did not defeat Goliath by pretending Goliath wasn't there.
He saw the giant clearly.
Naming your giant does not mean giving it greater authority over your life. It means becoming honest about what you are actually facing so that you can bring it honestly before God.
You cannot pray specifically about something you refuse to acknowledge. You cannot seek appropriate help for something you insist isn't there. And you cannot develop a path forward against something you will not identify.
The first step in facing a giant may not be courage.
It may be honesty.
What is standing in front of you today?
Addiction? Depression? A broken relationship? A frightening diagnosis? Financial devastation? Grief that refuses to lift? Fear that continues to control you?
Whatever it is, bring its real name before God.
The giant in your life has a name.
Say it.
Because you cannot face what you refuse to acknowledge is there.
