The Giant Falls | Trusting God for Victory Over the Giants You Face
What happens when the giant that has intimidated you for weeks, months, or even years finally falls? In First Samuel 17, one stone brought down the warrior who had paralyzed an entire army for forty days—but Scripture makes clear that the victory was bigger than David.
“And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead… So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone… but there was no sword in the hand of David.” — First Samuel 17:49–50 KJV
One stone.
One sling.
No sword.
And the giant fell.
In this episode of Digging Another Well, we continue our David and Goliath Bible study through First Samuel 17 and examine the moment Goliath finally falls—and what it teaches us about God’s faithfulness, overcoming seemingly impossible circumstances, and recognizing who deserves the glory when victory comes.
For forty days, Goliath had intimidated Israel.
Then everything changed in a moment.
Scripture emphasizes something important: there was no sword in the hand of David.
David didn’t defeat Goliath using the conventional weapons the world would have expected. The shepherd boy carried a sling, a stone, and confidence in the LORD.
Through a story from my years playing basketball, we also consider what happens when something that has seemed unbeatable finally loses its power. A breakthrough doesn’t always affect only the person experiencing it. Sometimes one person’s victory changes what everyone watching believes is possible.
When Goliath fell, the Philistine army fled.
One young man’s faith changed the battlefield for everyone around him.
Our victories can have a similar effect.
Someone may be watching how you face your giant. Your willingness to trust God through the battle may strengthen another person’s faith when they eventually face their own.
And when victory comes, we must remember where the glory belongs.
Not in our strength.
Not in our ability.
But in the faithfulness of God.
There was no sword in David’s hand.
And the giant fell anyway.
