The Armor That Doesn’t Fit

The Armor That Doesn’t Fit | Stop Fighting Your Giant With Someone Else’s Weapons Are you trying to face your battle using someone else’s approach? The Armor That Doesn’t Fit | Stop Fighting Your Giant With Someone Else’s Weapons

Are you trying to face your battle using someone else’s approach? In First Samuel 17, Saul gave David the best armor available—but David realized that what had worked for Saul was not what God had prepared him to use against Goliath.

“And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.” — First Samuel 17:39 KJV

Saul’s intentions were good.

He gave David a helmet of brass, a coat of mail, and his own sword. It was the armor of a king—exactly the kind of equipment a soldier might expect to carry into battle against a giant.

There was only one problem.

It wasn’t David’s armor.

In this episode of Digging Another Well, we continue our David and Goliath Bible study through First Samuel 17 and explore what David’s decision to remove Saul’s armor teaches us about comparison, spiritual gifts, God’s preparation, and trusting how God has uniquely equipped us.

Through a personal story from my years as a paramedic, we also consider what happens when we become so focused on copying someone else’s successful approach that we lose the strengths and abilities God has developed in us.

Saul’s armor wasn’t defective. It had been tested in Saul’s battles.

But it had never been tested in David’s.

David instead carried a staff, a sling, and five smooth stones—the familiar tools he had learned to use while tending sheep and facing lions and bears.

David entered the valley as David.

We can easily fall into the trap of watching how someone else faced their giant and assuming we must do exactly what they did. Their method worked. Their gifts look impressive. Their approach seems proven.

So we put on their armor.

Then we wonder why we cannot move.

God does not equip every believer identically. He has given us different gifts, experiences, abilities, opportunities, and histories of walking with Him. What looks ordinary in your hands may be exactly what God has been preparing you to use.

Someone else’s armor may look more impressive.

But God didn’t equip someone else for your battle.

He equipped you.

Lay down the borrowed armor. Pick up what God has placed in your hands. Walk into the valley trusting the God who prepared you for it.
