Still Plugged In?
The Connection That Makes Everything Else Work
“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” — John 15:5
Something can look perfectly functional on the outside and still be completely powerless.
Sometimes the problem is not the thing itself.
The problem is the connection.
Jesus uses that same picture when He describes our relationship with Him in John 15. He is the vine. We are the branches. A branch connected to the vine receives life and produces fruit. Disconnect it, and no amount of effort can make it produce what only the vine can provide.
In this episode of Digging Another Well, we examine what Jesus means when He tells His followers to abide in Him.
Abiding is more than occasionally turning toward God when we need something. It means remaining. Staying. Making our home in Christ. It is a continual relationship that quietly supplies everything necessary for spiritual life and fruitfulness.
And that makes Jesus’ final statement in John 15:5 especially challenging:
“Without me ye can do nothing.”
It is possible to be busy, productive, outwardly religious, and involved in all the right things while gradually losing the connection that gives those things spiritual life. Prayer becomes sporadic. Scripture becomes occasional. Time with God gets pushed aside. From the outside, everything still appears operational.
But appearance is all it has.
The answer is not to work harder.
It is to reconnect.
In this devotional, we consider whether our spiritual lives are genuinely flowing from an abiding relationship with Christ or whether we have slowly begun trying to produce fruit through effort alone.
The vine is still there.
The life is still flowing.
The fruit is still possible.
But it starts with staying connected.
