Made Perfect | Fearfully and Wonderfully Made — Psalm 139:14
What does it really mean to be “fearfully and wonderfully made”? Psalm 139:14 speaks directly to our identity, our differences, and the intentional care of the God who created us.
“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” — Psalm 139:14 KJV
This episode begins with a conversation I will never forget.
My son is deaf and uses cochlear implants. One day, while we were trying to talk in a noisy environment, he struggled to hear me. He stopped and expressed the sadness of being unable to hear his father’s voice the way his father could hear his.
He knew God had made him deaf.
And in that moment, he felt different.
I didn’t have a perfectly prepared response.
But I knew something with absolute certainty:
My son is exactly who God made him to be.
In this episode of Digging Another Well, we explore Psalm 139:14 and what Scripture teaches about being fearfully and wonderfully made, human differences, disability, identity, purpose, and seeing ourselves through the eyes of our Creator rather than through the standards of the world around us.
The world often treats anything outside its expected standard as something deficient—something that needs to be corrected before a person can be considered whole.
Psalm 139 gives us a radically different picture.
The God who formed us knows every part of us.
Nothing about us surprised Him.
Our worth isn’t determined by how closely we resemble somebody else’s definition of normal.
My son’s cochlear implants are an incredible gift. They help him navigate a world built largely around hearing. But they do not make him more complete.
He was already complete.
He bears the image of God.
And so do you.
Whatever you’ve been taught to view as a defect, disadvantage, or reason you’re somehow less than someone else, bring it before the God who made you.
Listen to what He says about His workmanship.
You are fearfully and wonderfully made.
