Iron Sharpeneth Iron | What Proverbs 27:17 Teaches About Friendship, Mentors, and Growth
Who are the people in your life who make you better? Proverbs 27:17 teaches that some of God’s most valuable relationships aren’t simply the ones that make us comfortable—they’re the ones that sharpen us.
“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.” — Proverbs 27:17 KJV
Sharpening requires contact.
It creates friction.
And sometimes it isn’t comfortable.
But the result is an edge that wasn’t there before.
In this episode of Digging Another Well, we explore Proverbs 27:17 and what Scripture teaches about Christian friendship, mentorship, accountability, leadership, personal growth, and the relationships God uses to shape us.
One of the most influential leaders in my career was a man named Mark.
Mark didn’t bring the best out of people through fear or intimidation.
He made you want to be better.
He challenged me to leave a mark in everything I did—to pursue a standard of excellence people would remember.
Mark sharpened me.
Not through friction that tore down, but through challenge that built up.
That’s an important distinction.
Biblical sharpening isn’t permission to criticize people relentlessly. It’s the kind of relationship where someone cares enough to ask the difficult question, hold a meaningful standard, recognize potential we don’t yet see, and refuse to let us comfortably remain where we are.
Those relationships are rare.
And they’re gifts.
So consider two questions.
Who is sharpening you?
And perhaps the harder one:
Who are you sharpening?
God uses people to accomplish things in us that we often cannot accomplish alone.
Receive the sharpening.
Then be willing to offer it.
