Everyone Faces Giants | Trusting God When Life Feels Overwhelming

What can David and Goliath teach us about facing the giants in our own lives? First Samuel 17 reminds us that overwhelming circumstances can appear without warning—but the size of the giant does not determine the outcome when God is with us.

Sometimes life feels steady. The challenges are manageable, the difficulties are familiar, and then something happens that changes everything.

A sickness. A devastating loss. A broken relationship. Financial uncertainty. A sorrow you never expected to carry.

Suddenly, you are standing in front of a giant.

In this episode of Digging Another Well, we begin a devotional Bible study through David and Goliath in First Samuel 17 and explore what this familiar biblical story teaches Christians about facing overwhelming circumstances, trusting God in difficult times, and finding faith when the way forward seems impossible.

“And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.” — First Samuel 17:4 KJV

Scripture deliberately describes Goliath as an intimidating opponent. We learn about his enormous size, his armor, and his weapons because Israel needed to see exactly what stood before them.

Goliath looked undefeatable.

And sometimes looking undefeatable is enough.

The giants we face often work the same way. A medical report can make the future suddenly seem impossible. Grief can carry a weight no one else fully understands. Financial problems can leave us unable to see a way forward. A fractured relationship can appear beyond repair.

These giants are real, and biblical faith does not require us to minimize them.

David did not defeat Goliath by pretending the giant wasn't there. He faced Goliath because he understood something the frightened Israelite army had forgotten: the giant standing in front of him was not greater than the God standing with him.

That truth becomes the foundation for this series.

Over the coming episodes, we will walk through the biblical account of David and Goliath as more than a familiar Sunday school story. We will examine First Samuel 17 as a practical biblical picture of how believers can respond when fear, uncertainty, hardship, and seemingly impossible circumstances stand between where we are and where God is leading us.

Whatever has appeared in your life that you never expected to face, your story is not finished.

The giant has appeared.

But God is still there.

And the God who was with David in the valley of Elah is still with His people today.
