#446 You Don't Need a Periodized Program | Guillermo Blanco

You do not need a periodized plan to build high-level performance. Guillermo Blanco started lifting in eighth grade before moving through Division I football programs, collegiate strength coaching, multi-ply powerlifting, and training military populations in the Army's H2F program. Facing unpredictable deployment schedules, minimal equipment, and low training ages, he abandoned rigid percentage-based periodization in favor of adaptable general physical preparedness that keeps lifters performing when life destroys the plan. INSIDE THIS CONVERSATION The Posterior Chain Deficit: Why high school, collegiate, and military athletes all lack back strength. Gym in a Box Constraints: Programming for 100+ soldiers with minimal equipment and unpredictable schedules. Periodization Fallacy: Why strict yearly plans fail tactical populations and how to train for adaptability. The 1x20 Protocol: Using simple high-rep total-body circuits to build rapid work capacity in athletes. Raw to Multi-Ply Evolution: How lifting in gear built long-term raw strength and joint resilience. Minimal Effective Strain: Finding the exact training dose needed to make continuous strength gains. MEET THE GUEST Guillermo Blanco is a tactical strength and conditioning coach with 15 years of experience across military performance, collegiate athletics, private sports performance, and competitive powerlifting. He holds a master's degree in exercise physiology from the University of Louisville, a bachelor's degree in kinesiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and has been an NSCA CSCS since 2013. Guillermo previously served as head powerlifting coach, assistant athletic performance coach, and adjunct instructor at McKendree University, alongside experience with Aurora University and University of Illinois football. Across raw, classic raw, and multi-ply powerlifting, he translates real-world barbell mastery into practical training principles for high-demand populations.
