At over nine thousand feet, alone in a fire tower for the whole summer, a lookout finds three lines left in pencil by the last person who worked the peak. Don't answer it if it calls you. Don't fight it if it comes. Don't look at it if it wants you to. He breaks them one at a time. And every time he does, the thing at the treeline climbs to a level past the last one.
