Why You Should Skip Vacation

August 6, 2026 | Episode 5514

Host: Scott Smith

Episode Description

I skipped my vacation this year. Everybody disappeared over the 4th of July, and instead of going with them, I told everyone I'd be out of town, stayed home, and wrote a book. Best vacation I never took.

Seven days later I had 30,000 words — not because I got smarter, but because I finally got quiet enough to hear what was already inside me.

Today I'll show you what's really hiding behind your calendar, and how one dense day of discovery can outproduce months and months of busy work.

Featured Story

The morning I started, I had no idea what I was going to write. I headed out the door to walk my dogs, an idea popped into my head, and I hit record on my watch. Then I forgot it was running.

It recorded me at the gym. It recorded two guys pushing back on my stories and feeding me ideas. It recorded me talking to myself on the drive home. Two hours and eight minutes of everything I said.

I ran it through transcription, sat down, and fought with it for about six hours. That accidental recording became the base of the entire book outline — and seven days later, the book was nearly finished.

Important Points

  • Your best work isn't hiding from you. It's waiting behind your calendar, buried under everyone else's appointments.
  • Clearing the runway matters more than getting smarter. Quiet is what lets you hear what's already inside of you.
  • One wide open day of discovery can produce more than months of busy work. Creativity shows up when you make space.

Memorable Quotes

  • I didn't get smarter that week. I finally got quiet enough to hear what was already inside of me. I just made space.
  • Your best work is not hiding from you. It is waiting behind your calendar — behind your boss, your clients, your stuff.
  • Skip a vacation for something you really want, and you'll have more energy than you ever thought was possible.

Scott's Three-Step Approach

  1. Clear the runway completely — tell everyone you're gone, go quiet, and protect one wide open week or even one day.
  2. Capture what shows up in the space. Hit record, talk it out, walk the dogs, and let your brain finally speak up.
  3. Sit down with what you captured and fight it onto paper for six dense hours. The outline will show up as you work.
