Ep. 245 | Claude Can Now Edit Your Google Docs and Sheets

Anthropic's Claude can now work inside Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides and edit the file you have open, right in the file. It's a public beta for paid Claude plans, and the default setting asks before every edit, so leave it there. Mike and Frank explain the news in plain English. Claude for Google Workspace is an add-on, meaning a small app you install from the Google Workspace Marketplace that shows up under the Extensions menu. Claude opens in a sidebar, reads only the file you have open (plus any connectors you turn on), and makes changes in place: formulas, pivot tables, charts, and data cleanup in Sheets; rewrites and restructuring in Docs; new slides that match your deck in Slides. It can also just answer questions about a file without changing anything, which is the safest place to start. The control part: the mode switch at the bottom of the sidebar defaults to "Ask before edits," where Claude describes each change and waits for you to click Allow. "Accept all edits" still pauses for links, images from the web, web addresses, or access changes. Claude can't share the file, give anyone access, change ownership, or set up menus or scheduled automations. Its edits are recorded under your name in File → Version history, which is also your undo. Anthropic warns that files can carry hidden instructions in white text or tiny fonts, so review proposed changes, especially in files from outside your company. Anthropic says this content isn't used to train its models; inputs and outputs are deleted within 30 days, with exceptions listed in its help center; not for protected health information. Takeaway: if you don't pay for Claude, nothing changes. If you do and your shop runs on Google Sheets and Docs, install it (Marketplace → Install → Extensions → Claude → Open Claude), start with questions, keep "Ask before edits" on, try it on a copy first, and tell your team Claude's edits show up under their name. If the install button is grayed out, your Google Workspace admin has to allow or install it from the Google Admin console.
