Money Is Already Digital. The Question Is Who Controls It?: Part One w/ Dr. Tonya Evans
transcript
show notes
Money has been digital for years. The real question was never whether it should be, it's who controls the database behind it: a bank, a government, or math. In this episode, Dr. Tonya Evans opens with that question, sparked by something Karen Hunter, host of The Karen Hunter Show on SiriusXM Urban View Radio, asked her live on air the week before: what is money? Dr. Evans runs it through debit cards, Venmo, direct deposit, and the twenty in your wallet to make the case that money made the jump to digital a long time ago, then goes deeper into what money is actually for. You've never wanted the dollar itself; you've wanted what it can get you. From there, the episode traces the three kinds of trust that have carried money through human history: trust in people, trust in institutions, and now, trust in verification. This is part one of a two-part series. Part two picks up next week with Bitcoin's answer to the trust question, and the fight happening in Washington right now over who gets to decide what counts as money.
