Dr. Crippen

In 1910, music-hall singer Belle Elmore disappeared from her north London home. Her husband, Dr Hawley Crippen, said she had gone to America, but her friends kept asking questions. This episode of Compact Murder follows their enquiries, the discovery beneath a cellar floor and the wireless message that helped police intercept Crippen and Ethel Le Neve on the St Lawrence River. At the Old Bailey, a disputed scar and traces of poison helped secure a murder conviction. Nearly a century later, DNA recovered from a trial slide raised fresh questions about whose remains the police had found.
