Lord Byron was one of the defining figures of the Romantic movement, but his poetry formed only one part of an extraordinary life. Born into a troubled aristocratic family, he became a literary celebrity whose political defiance, turbulent relationships and rejection of convention fascinated Regency Britain. Scandal eventually drove him into permanent exile, yet his final years brought some of his greatest writing and a personal commitment to the Greek struggle for independence.
