Why Do AI Systems Assume Operations Are Idempotent?

AI coding tools reliably write the happy path: call the API, write the row, send the email. What they almost never write unprompted is the code that makes a retry safe, so the code they generate assumes that running an operation twice gives the same result as running it once. In a world of webhooks that arrive more than once, scheduled jobs that overlap, and agents that retry on timeout, that assumption quietly produces double charges, duplicate posts, and corrupted state. This episode explains why the gap exists and how builders can design idempotency into the architecture instead of hoping the model adds it.

At aijoe.ai, we build AI-powered systems like the ones discussed in this series.
If you’re ready to turn an idea into a working application, we’d be glad to help.
