August 18: ST. HELENA: Finding the True Cross
transcript
show notes
At almost eighty years old, St. Helena crossed the ancient world on pilgrimage to find the actual Cross of Jesus.
St. Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine, traveled thousands of miles to Jerusalem in her final years to walk where Jesus walked. Along the way she visited prisoners, cared for the sick, and gave alms to the poor — pilgrimage lived out through mercy. In Jerusalem, she ordered an excavation near Calvary and, according to ancient tradition, uncovered the True Cross itself.
"She didn't just want to read about Calvary. She wanted to stand there."
