Broadway Block - Episode 249
Fresh off recording an episode with Locked on Rangers, we delve further into the hot button topics of conversation this off season so far. We share our thoughts on Pavel Dorofeyev as we start to have an idea of what the top lines could look like. We speculate on the 3rd and 4th lines and give our best ideas as far as what they might look like. We also zoom in on the glut of defenseman the roster currently has, with guys like Vaakanainen and more recent top picks like Fortescue and Smits currently on the outside looking in. Come deadline, I would expect the team moves on from a Schneider, Vaakanainen, or Robertson to make headway for the laundry list of defense currently not on the roster, with Morrow representing a piece I'd also be comfortable moving on from. If I had to guess, I would say the offseason moves are about 95% of the way there with Braden Schneider officially minting his new contract. We spend a decent amount of the show discussing the deal and how it changes thing for both player and team. I don't think 5.6m AAV is too far off, but I think most people expected to see longer term. Does the one year bridge deal provide an opportunity to see what you have in the former first round pick, or does the short contract show a more telling window into Schneider's future with the Rangers? Broadway Block - Episode 245
The New York Rangers had themselves an extremely busy weekend to kick off the offseason, and have reignited our hopes in potentially reaching the playoffs, and at the very least improving the result from last season. The draft started out with the selection of Alberts Smits, and a huge trade involving two first round picks for Pavel Dorofeyev, an elite scoring winger from Vegas. Then Drury came out with a flurry of moves to open up July 1st free agency, completely overhauling the defense as well as depth on the forward roster, plus a backup goalie. The '25-'26 season is officially over, and I can say for a lot of Rangers fans out there that this one is definitely one I'd like to forget soon. Despite a division rival winning the cup, a recently traded Ranger hoisting said cup, and moving down in the draft lotto despite having the 3rd worst record all season, the year was one of the more frustrating seasons we've had to suffer through recently. As it draws to a close, we make the "bearish and bullish" case for the Rangers going into next season, touch on the landscape league-wide, and indulge a little on our hometown Knicks getting to the promised land. With the NHL Stanley Cup Finals officially underway, it's hard to process how quickly the season ended and that it's already June. In today's episode, we touch on the upcoming NHL entry draft, and the recent news that former Ranger Manny Malhotra has been appointed as head coach for the Canucks, which almost certainly means they'll be drafting his son Caleb with the 3rd overall pick. The domino effect from there is that the Rangers can more than likely pivot their focus at 5th overall to a defenseman like Carels, Reid or Verhoeff, with the top of the draft shaping up to be McKenna, Stenberg and Malhotra. We also chat about K'Andre Miller playing in an elevated role with the Hurricanes, and whether or not that trade still makes sense with the benefit of almost a year of hindsight. The Rangers didn't get lucky in the NHL draft lotto, but the depth of prospects at the top does look as though they can either escape with a good player, or potentially wheel and deal that pick to get a more ready-now piece. With a huge offseason ahead of them, the work begins now to retool the roster into a playoff worthy team. When you look at teams like the Flyers and Ducks in the playoffs, and what a losing season gives you as a consolation prize, I don't see how anyone can cheer on a tanking year. Broadway Block - Episode 233
With the last home game of the season, the Rangers fall short of completing an entertaining home-stand, losing to the Sabres after recapturing the lead briefly. In what has been a disappointing year on all fronts, some players have been truly entertaining to watch. As the organization embraces this new chapter, the apparent "youth movement" of players like Adam Sykora, Jaroslav Chmelar, Drew Fortescue, and to a lesser extent, Lafreniere, Perreault and Cuylle, have been exciting to watch as them come into their own. When the Letter 2.0 was first minted, I along with many Rangers fans had my second thoughts about how to team planned on executing such a task, but as we watch some of these players become household names, it's going to be a fun season to watch next year if instead of "retool" they really just meant "let the kids cook". After an electric goalie fight between Igor Shesterkin and Jacob Markstrom, the New York Rangers extend their winning streak at home to three games, as they continue to find ways down the stretch to leave feeling good about their performance. Broadway Block - Episode 231
As we reach the end of the season, with playoffs hopes offically over with the loss to the Maple Leafs, we chat through this episode about the best usage of time for the final 10 games of the season. The Rangers have recently signed Drew Fortescue, a young and exciting prospect that could perhaps make his NHL debut sooner than later, with question marks surrounding the current d-core and Drury's willingness to move on from some of them. Adam Sykora made his NHL debut against the Leafs, and didn't look uncomfortable either. In my opinion, it's much better to have him play these games than someone like Sheary or Parssinen. And rookie goalie from Hartford, Dylan Garand, made his first NHL start the other night and looked good doing it, despite the shootout loss to the Jets. The Rangers are past moral victories, they're past the point of having hope come from the standings, what matters now as the season draws to a close is that they figure out what they have in the locker room, and what's waiting for them in the minor ranks. Broadway Block - Episode 230
The New York Rangers are a puzzling team. It took them the better part of the season to string together 4 wins, win a back to back, or manage to produce really anything to get the fanbase excited. Since the break, the team is 6-3-2 following the loss on Wednesday night to the devils, which doesn't exactly sound amazing, but if that was scaled over the course of an 82 game season, it would be good for 102 points, and put them comfortably in the playoff mix. If there's any silver lining, Igor Shesterkin has been nothing short of incredible, the power play is clicking, and the top line of Mika Zibanejad, Alexis Lafreniere, and Gabe Perreault is simply a treat to watch. In just the last 9 games, the three has 34 combined for points and has connected for some incredible plays, demonstrating amazing chemistry. When the games don't matter and the points don't either, it's nice that there's at least something to watch, even without a winning result. If they win? I'm happy to watch. If they lose?
