Worry can feel like love. When you're raising neurodivergent kids, worry can even feel like the responsible thing to do. But worry quietly pulls our attention inward, and our kids' nervous systems notice. In this episode, I'm joined by psychologists Dr. Susan Bauerfeld and Chris Parrott, co-authors of “Base Camp Parenting: Worry Less to Help Your Kids More.” They offer a framework I love. Our kids are out there climbing their own mountains, and our role is to be the base camp, the place they return to rest, recover, and make sense of what happened on the climb. A base camp leader doesn't climb for their child or drag them to the summit. They help them take the next step. We talk about the real difference between concern and worry, and why concern keeps us focused outward on what our child needs, while worry turns us inward to manage our own discomfort. Chris and Susan walk through their process for catching worry in the moment: spotting it, noticing and naming what you feel, normalizing it, asking whether the alarm is actually helping, and exhaling to reset your nervous system. We also explore how kids look to us to answer the question "Are we okay?", why a parent stuck in alarm can keep a child stuck there too, and the simple shift from worry to wonder that opens up possibilities instead of shutting them down. If worry has become the background noise of your parenting, this conversation offers a gentler, more grounded way forward, for you and for your child. Listen to the full episode now.
