It’s Birthday Week in the Great Canadian Baking Show tent, and we’re celebrating with a whole lot of layers, some surprising ingredients, and plenty of doughnuts.
With Vincent off exploring Japan, our friend Andrew Evers, Season 7 alumnus, joins us for Week 5. And he has some exciting news of his own: he’s returning to the tent for The Great Canadian Holiday Baking Show on November 29!
This week, the bakers tackled three very different birthday celebrations. For the Signature, it was Lapis Legit, a rich, beautifully layered Indonesian spice cake requiring patience, precision, and a whole lot of time under the broiler.
The Technical brought us Birthday Bao, also known as Peach Longevity Buns. Despite their peachy appearance, there’s no actual peach involved. Instead, these delicate steamed buns are filled with lotus seed paste, an ingredient none of us have ever worked with before.
And for the Showstopper, it was time for a birthday doughnut extravaganza. The bakers had to create an impressive display of doughnuts, balancing flavour, creativity, technique, and presentation.
Join us as we discuss the triumphs, the challenges, and our favourite moments from Birthday Week, with Andrew (and Steven, as always) sharing his own insider perspective from his time in the tent. And make sure to tune in to the Great Canadian Holiday Baking Show on CBC and the CBC Gem app on November 29!
