As the British Army and Navy assembled in New York Harbor over July and August, 1776, Admiral Richard Howe reached out to his friend Benjamin Franklin to see if they could put an end to this conflict without further violence. Franklin made clear in his response that the US was independent of Britain, and that unless Britain accepted that fact, there would be war.
