Calling All Cars #16, "The Chloroform Murder," begins when Mrs. Maude Kennedy receives an urgent phone call during dinner from Percy Martin, insisting on meeting her alone. Despite warnings from her son Philip and daughter-in-law about wearing her valuable diamonds in public, the widow leaves to meet Percy at a deserted corner of 6th Avenue and West Jefferson. Percy, a young man she has helped financially in the past, demands more money to get married, threatening to reveal damaging secrets about Mrs. Kennedy to her son if she refuses. When she insists she has no cash to give him, Percy's attention turns to the diamonds glittering on her fingers.
What begins as an uncomfortable encounter quickly turns sinister as Percy offers Mrs. Kennedy what he claims is a gift of perfume. The meeting takes a deadly turn in the thinly settled, poorly lit section of town, leaving detectives to determine whether they are investigating a murder or something else entirely. The case will test the skills and persistence of the investigating officers as they work to uncover the truth behind what happened to Mrs. Kennedy and her precious diamonds.
