The National Federation of State High School Association has a Sports Medicine Advisory Committee that is comprised of numerous sports medicine professionals from around the country. It makes recommendations to states that intend to make high school sports safer for adolescent athletes. The Host of this Program: Mark Halstead: Dr. Mark Halstead received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Medical School. He stayed at the University of Wisconsin for his pediatric residency, followed by a year as the chief resident. Following residency, he completed a pediatric and adult sports medicine fellowship at Vanderbilt University. He has been an elected member to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness and the Board of Directors of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM). He has served as a team physician or medical consultant to numerous high schools, Vanderbilt University, Belmont University, Washington University, St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Blues, St. Louis Athletica, and St. Louis Rams. He serves and has served on many local, regional and national committees as an advisor for sports medicine and concussions. The Guest Featured Inside this Program: Alex Diamond Dr. Alex Diamond is the Director of the Vanderbilt Youth Sports Health Center and a Professor in the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery, Pediatrics and Neurological Surgery at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt. Dr. Diamond is the chair of the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee for the National Federation of State High School Associations and is a member of the advisory council for the National Council of Youth Sports. He serves as a Team Physician for several high schools, Vanderbilt University and the Nashville Predators. In partnership with the Tennessee Department of Health, he is the creator and director of the Tennessee Safe Stars Initiative, the first youth sports safety rating system in the country. He serves as a consultant for the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association and is a past member of the executive committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness. He is a staunch community advocate and has testified multiple times before the Tennessee Legislature on key sports medicine issues effecting youth successfully resulting in several bills being signed into law. Dr. Diamond has over 50 publications and his work focuses on injury prevention and the promotion of health and safety in youth sports.
