The Tip Isn’t Always Money
Send us Fan Mail Episode 20: The Tip Isn't Always Money | 25 Years Behind the Bar Six zero-dollar tips in a row. Four more blank tip lines. And one generous soul who left me fifty fucking cents. Welcome to another episode of $1 Is Not Enough, where 25 years behind the bar has taught me that stupid never takes a day off. This week, I'm sharing the story of a particularly frustrating night behind the bar. Between two bartenders, we rang up $3,600 in sales, walked away with $240 each, and collected enough zero-dollar tip receipts to start a very depressing scrapbook. But this episode isn't another rant about how nobody tips anymore. Because that's simply not true. Most customers are decent. Plenty are generous. And after 25 years in hospitality, I've learned that the occasional cheap bastard is just part of the business. What doesn't get talked about enough is the emotional side of bartending. When you spend your career making people laugh, giving them shit, remembering their stories, and turning an ordinary night out into something memorable, you take pride in that connection. And sometimes, a handful of customers can make you question whether any of it matters. But just when I was ready to write off the entire evening, a young couple reminded me why I still love what I do. In this episode, we're talking about: The ridiculous streak of zero-dollar tips and the infamous fifty-cent gratuity. Why bad tipping experiences can affect even veteran bartenders. The difference between making great drinks and being a great bartender. Why personality, humor, and genuine connections matter in hospitality. How one unexpected compliment can completely turn around a terrible shift. Why appreciation matters, even though it doesn't pay the fucking electric bill. After 25 years behind the bar, I've learned something: Sometimes the tip that stays with you the longest isn't the one written on the receipt.
